Emily Howell Photography

If you're looking for that dreamy rocky mountain vibe, I highly suggest booking your engagement or wedding photos with Emily Howell. Not only is she a dear friend, but she is wonderful to work with. She will give you plenty of guidance during your session to make sure that you are comfortable and really knows how to capture your emotions in the moment.

I mean just look at these photos! Talk about a fairytale.

What made you want to be a photographer and how long have you been in the industry?

EH: I’ve loved photography for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would look at photos of all the places I wanted to travel and think “wow, I want to be the person to take these”. Fast-forward to high school and my very short-lived theater career. I got my first professional camera and started taking headshots for the school productions. I realized pretty quickly that I loved working with people. There's something magical about being able to help make memories that will be cherished forever. So, I actually started freelancing in high school doing headshots and senior photos and over the years that evolved into couples, families and weddings - which was over 10 years ago! I even majored in photography in college, so it’s definitely been a part of my life for a long time.

What's your favorite season for weddings or events?

EH: My favorite season for weddings is also my favorite season for everything; FALL! I embrace all the basic fall activities; apple picking, pumpkin carving, hay rides, leaf peeping – and my diet is 80% pumpkin flavored things from September through November. The best part about fall weddings is definitely the colors. I love how warm and inviting photos from the fall months look and the cooler temperatures always encourages cozy poses!

What's your dream photoshoot location?

EH: Iceland! It. Is. Breathtaking. I went on a trip there with my best friend a couple years ago and fell in love with the unique nature of the landscape. I would love to get to tag along for an elopement there.

What are your top three tips for a couple's engagement photos or wedding photos?

EH: Comfort is key! Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in. I have this conversation with couples all the time; especially for engagement shoots. If you’re constantly worried about wrinkles, you can’t move around comfortably in your clothes or your feet start to hurt, you’ll be distracted and it will take focus away from capturing the genuine connection you share with your partner.

Use your photographer as a resource! Your relationship with your photographer begins from the moment you first connect. We’re not just here to show up at a scheduled time, take pictures and leave (unless that’s what you want). For engagement shoots, I work with my couples on picking a location, let them share outfit options with me and answer any other questions they have leading up to shoot. Similarly, I check in with my couples leading up to a wedding and am available to help them decide how much time we’ll need to devote to wedding party photos, couple portraits, family photos, getting ready, etc. So don’t be afraid to collaborate & connect!

Have fun! As simple as it sounds, it’s true. These are some of the happiest and most fun memories you'll make, so enjoy the moment. Go all in on the silly prompts your photographer uses, bust out all your best moves on the dance floor, share an intimate moment like no one is watching; whether it’s an engagement shoot or your wedding these days are about celebrating the love you share with your partner. So celebrate – and let your photographer do the rest!
